After a very successful string of memorable shows at its previous home THE GROVE in beautiful BEND, OREGON, one of Stateside's finest nights: 'JUICE!' Why release it now? Why give it away?

First and foremost, I was sick of all of this ‘unfinished’ music hanging over my head. So I woke up one day and decided that it was finished. All of it. No more editing. No more second guessing. No more endless tweaking to try to get that one label to pay attention (or to appease my own perfectionism). Also, I’m absolutely positive there is music on here that nobody except me has ever heard one second of. So here it is, with all of its blemishes. With its poor EQ choices, and weak-ish snare drums. Its dancefloor tracks that will clear out dancefloors and sound better in headphones. Its weak beats and occasionally boring drops. It’s all yours! I’m tired of thinking about it, and how (and if) I could have made it better. But actually, now that I’ve compiled all of it and taken a step back, I think there’s some pretty good stuff here. Some of it is extremely polished, some of it is very raw and bare-bones. But it all kind of makes sense together. Listening through the really raw, unfinished bits to master them reminded me of how I first found this weird little raw and unfinished sounding genre, and how it changed my perception of music forever. So please don’t tell me about the distortion on the left channel of blah blah blah and how it would sound better in “Dubly.” I’m not fucking listening to you.

Secondly, I’m retiring the Sable Gray name, so this double LP is a sort of final statement. Over the past year, I’ve already drifted outside of the drum & bass scene to pursue other musical and personal directions, and I think it’s (mostly) permanent. Sable Gray had a pretty good run for a while there. I got to play in some great venues, on some great systems, with some great friends. The tunes on Obsolete (well, the ones I actually sent to people) had support from some great DJs all over the world, which was amazing. My music started popping up in interesting places, like on BBC Radio 1 and Kiss FM in the UK. so thank you to each and every DJ and listener that supported my music. It’s been amazing being a small part of this worldwide, grassroots culture that is drum & bass. And a special thank you to Matt & Terravita, Lenore & Bill and the whole Elements crew, the Statesmen, Place 42 at Telluric, TGM and Basswerk, Ross T & Sydney at Trainspotters, Dave Prism, C-Dubz & my Bassic friends, Seismic, DJ DB & Secret Night of Science, Random Movement, The Ghost, Stunna, Overfiend and the whole Bassdrive crew. The results are in for KMag's latest remix competition: SEBA's "PAINTED SKIES" (originally released on SECRET OPERATIONS) was the track open for producers to put into their own contexts, with prizes graciously offered by ABLETON and SOUNDCLOUD. Bordeaux, France's GERWIN took top honors followed by Chicago's STUNNA, Texas' SEATHASKY, and Scotland's LM1. Many thanks to everyone involved as well as all the listeners and SOUNDCLOUD followers.

DRUM+BASS Producers Unite To Help With JAPANESE Disaster Relief

One month after a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami damaged a great number of homes and lives, the people of JAPAN are still experiencing aftershocks in their attempt to rebuild their great country. Recently, a handful of DRUM+BASS producers bonded together to create a charity compilation to support the victims of this epic tragedy. Spearheaded by MAKOTO on his own HUMAN ELEMENTS label, a 15-track digital album entitled 'SOMETHING WE CAN DO' has become available to purchase with proceeds going directly to the disaster relief fund. I'll be heading westward once again this FEBRUARY as I journey down the coast of CALIFORNIA on a quick DJ tour.......

Kicking things off in SAN FRANCISCO on TUESDAY the 15TH at the 'SHELTER' night going down at UNDERGROUND SF, I'll be spinning alongside heavy-hitting DJ/producers PARALLEL (PORTLAND, OR) and METHOD ONE (SAN FRAN) as well as the birthday-celebrating tandem WARBREAKER and GRACE and the return to the M-I-C by one of the BAY AREA's greats: AX!OM MC.

On FRIDAY the 18TH, I'll be making my debut at the 'SACRED SOUNDS' monthly happening at 2ND STREET JAZZ in downtown LOS ANGELES sharing the stage with all three members of established DRUM+BASS act BACHELORS OF SCIENCE.

With its impressive release history, strong label roster (including both established and fresh producers: PFM, TAYLA, J-LAZE, FURNEY, SMOTE, BLADE, dRamatic, dbAudio, MR JOSEPH, EDWARD OBERON, MATHEMATICS, ATLANTIC CONNECTION, STUNNA, PHYSICS, PAUL T, QUMULUS, and many more), and both a handful of 12" vinyl releases and artist LP's set to drop, 2010 looks to be the year the TELLURIC RECORDINGS camp makes some bigger waves in the world of deeper, refined DRUM+BASS.

On the eve of the label's 12th vinyl release featuring stellar tracks from UK's dRamatic + dbAudio and BLADE, THE GREENROOM caught up with the main man behind revered, BROOKLYN-based TELLURIC RECORDINGS: owner, DJ, promoter, and producer PLACE 42 ..........

GREENROOM: First off, thanks for taking some time out to answer a few questions for the readers and the fans.

Can you give us a quick rundown of when you got into DRUM+BASS initially and also what inspired you to launch the TELLURIC imprint back in 2005?

PLACE 42: DRUM+BASS for me was something that stemmed out of the early HARDCORE/JUNGLE scene. Hearing a lot of the early music and its progression led me into D+B. It really became official for me upon hearing LTJ BUKEM's seminal classic "HORIZONS" in the mid-1990's. The TELLURIC label was a project that I had been mulling over since the early 2000's. Fast forward a few years, and I started to communicate with some great artists so I felt it was time to dive in head first and offer the masses something I hold very close to my heart: classic, timeless music.

GREENROOM: Deep, atmospheric and musical are a few words used to describe the TELLURIC 'sound' as I've heard from many fans and followers of the label and its artists. How much influence and inspiration have labels such as GOOD LOOKING and CADENCE had on your direction as a DJ and ultimately as a label A&R man?

PLACE 42: The GOOD LOOKING ORGANISATION and all its sublabels are really what have helped to hone my sound and vibe as both a DJ and seeker of new talent for my label. I have been spinning since '95 and have really always held GLO in the utmost regard. They have such a rich catalogue and history behind them without a doubt. I've definitely learned a lot of the business-side through my association with them and have, in turn, have strived to keep my own standards and vision with TELLURIC in the same vein.

GREENROOM: Coinciding TELLURIC's tenth vinyl release, you recently cooked up an excellent mix CD entitled 'TELLURIC ACTIVITY VOL. 1.' It features many upcoming artists making bigger moves these days such as CHRIS INPERSPECTIVE, DIRRRTY B, and PARHELIA, to name a few. Can you give a preview of any new artists and are there more label projects on the horizon?

PLACE 42: Sure, and a lot to say the least! First off, I've started working exclusively with three artists from scratch on album projects for the label: MR JOSEPH out of the UK, BLADE also from the UK, and SMOTE coming out of SLOVAKIA. I'm very proud of each of these artists as I truly see them being major players in the new generation of deep DRUM+BASS producers. I've taken a different approach in dealing with this from a pure A&R angle by working with the artists real-time on an executive production level as the albums are being put together. Two-way communication working toward a greater good has really made each project exciting and truly original. Also on the horizon, I have another volume in the 'TELLURIC ACTIVITY' mix series planned for the near future as well as three more vinyl releases for 2010 from the likes of dRamatic + dbAudio (which actually is just hitting the shops now), PAUL SG, DYNAMIC, and mSdoS.

GREENROOM: As a label owner releasing both vinyl and digital formats, do you think one is more important than the other or do you feel both are a necessity in the evolving electronic music market?

PLACE 42: I truly believe in the superior fidelity of vinyl over digital and I will continue to support that format as long as I can. On the other hand, I also realize digital has firmly declared its place in the market place on a global level today. I will be launching a TELLURIC DIGITAL website soon, embracing the tremendous amount of new and forthcoming music as well as the TELLURIC back catalogue.

GREENROOM: You've hosted many shows as a promoter in the past few years in your hometown of NEW YORK CITY. How's the scene for the deeper, dancefloor D+B these days locally and are you going to continue to throw your 'TELLURIC ACTIVITIES' in the future?

PLACE 42: Being someone who holds his parties in very high regard as far as sound, proper venue, top-shelf national and international headliners, it's been an uphill battle in NYC to say the least. The scene here seems to mainly feature and embrace the more local and mainstream sounds of JUNGLE and DUBSTEP. The deeper sound and quality of the party does not matter to the average partygoer in the current NYC climate. To promote my label and sound outside of town, I will be playing some marquee shows coming up with the one and only LTJ BUKEM. The way I see things right now, as ever, is all about quality over quantity. The 'TELLURIC ACTIVITY' parties will happen in NYC when things pick up though and we are also having tremendous opportunities and support for shows abroad where the scene is much stronger.

My debut on DOC SCOTT's legendary 31 RECORDS label is now in shops worldwide. The collaborative track "EDGE OF THE NIGHT" with established San Francisco-based producer METHOD ONE is also backed with a solo outing from M1 entitled "AQUAMARINE" combining to make the 44th release for the esteemed imprint. In the past two decades since he first started experimenting with sampled loops and electronics, San Francisco, California-based JASON LEDER (aka METHOD ONE) has become one of the elder statesmen of the North American Drum + Bass scene. As a DJ, he's honed his craft through hundreds of gigs stretching back to the early '90s, and can currently be heard weekly on his popular 'VINYL + CIRCUITRY' radio program Fridays on BASSDRIVE. As a seasoned promoter, he helped to throw some of the first raves and jungle events in the East Coast's Mid-Atlantic region. As a musician and prolific producer, he's responsible for numerous releases and remixes on labels such as 31, COVERT OPERATIONS, VAMPIRE, GOOD LOOKING sub-label NEXUS, RED MIST, TESTFLIGHT, OFFWORLD, ELEKTRA, and WARNER BROTHERS (among many others). In addition, METHOD ONE has found time to be both a managing partner of renown label LEVITATED RECORDINGS and also provide creative, visual solutions through his own SECONDMETHOD graphic design company.

WMC 2010: The Aftermath.......

Another great time was had by all this year at Miami, Florida's annual WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE. Saw a ton of familiar faces and met some new friends as well. A quick run-down of the week...

Kicked off the week nicely on Wednesday @ Jazid for the WMC edition of 'STANK LOVE' (big shouts to THE SUBSTITUTES for throwing another rocking party). I was accompanied by talented Florida-based vocalist JETT during my set. Thanks JETT!

Early Thursday, it was over to old haunt LIQUOR LOUNGE for the BASSDRIVETUNES label launch day party which featured a number of the station's DJs including Miami-based FUSION featuring MC DIRECT among many others.

Later that evening, we headed to PURDY LOUNGE for my set at the 'CALL + RESPONSE' party. With great music from METHODUS, ATLANTIC CONNECTION, and tons of others, it was a great way to get prepped up for the evening. Big thanks to ELECTRON C and kru for putting this on.

Rounding out Thursday, we headed to MEKKA for 'THE WORLD OF DRUM+BASS' party. Really nice venue with multiple rooms, the music was banging all night with an especially epic set from BREAKAGE in the main room. Big thanks to the COMPRESSION kru out of San Fran for holding things down at this party and also to EDWARD OBERON for tagging with me during my set and also the mic control from MC DIRECT.

Friday, it was over to the downtown bayfront for the first day of ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL. I'd actually never been to the fest, and it was definitely a massive feast for the eyes and ears. With multiple stages and genres of music displayed, I got to represent DRUM+BASS alongside ORLANDO's CIRCLE K and MC COLLABORATOR (and aldo got a chance to have a whirl on the new PIONEER CDJ 2000s ...they are very dope).

Late-night on Friday, it was back to the LIQUOR LOUNGE for the DRIVEN AM and friends' showcase which featured artists from the management company and music label's roster alongside a number of close friends. Big thanks to DAVE SHICHMAN for throwing a fun and FREE party for all the WMC-goers. Good times.

Saturday afternoon, it was kick-back time to chill out for a minute on OCEAN DRIVE...

...and then it was straight over to the second annual METALHEADZ vs BASSDRIVE party. This year it was held at the HEATHROW LOUNGE and proved to be a truly memorable night with great music and vibes on both floors. Big big thanks to OVERFIEND, DVUS, DFUNK, JAMIE and ELIZABETH SMITH, A-SIDES, METHODUS, and all the fans and supporters who made the night another success.

Closed things out on Sunday night back up at the FUSION/URBAN CHEMISTRY RECORDINGS studio for their weekly BASSDRIVE show 'LAB SESSIONS' which turned into a 10-hour marathon set as we overlapped into 'SUNDAYNITEFEVER' territory. A great way to close out the week. Big thanks to the FUSION guys for the hospitality and good times. Until next year..........

WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE 2010 [MIAMI]

So yes folks, the time is upon us: the 24th edition of MIAMI's famed WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE is set to go down this week in SOUTH BEACH and the greater downtown area...

Personally, I'm gonna be kicking off festivities starting on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24th with a special WMC edition of 'THE GREENROOM' show which will be broadcast live from MIAMI on BASSDRIVE.com. This edition will feature good friend and guests FUSION (the guys behind the excellent URBAN CHEMISTRY RECORDINGS and also BASSDRIVE Radio's very own 'LAB SESSIONS' program). UCR has a number of strong releases on its catalogue to date and they're now set to present the label's first various artists' compilation entitled 'STANDARD GRAVITY.'

Another session filled-to-the-brim with new music this show as I started things up with the return of PFM and his epic opening tune "EQUILIBRIUM" (from the latest offering on TELLURIC RECORDINGS in shops now). Debuted a bunch of excellent new slabs of United States pressure from the likes of STEREOTYPE, FLACO, CJ WEAVER, INDIDJINOUS, CALCULON, BEATCHEMIST, TYLER STRAUB, SUBMORPHICS, among others. LIBRARY MUSIC NUGGETS #1

Any one who's well-acquainted with me knows I love my rare funk and jazz. If you're like-minded, and do some digging, you'll uncover a satellite world revolving around PRODUCTION MUSIC or 'LIBRARY MUSIC', which is basically original soundtracks, scores, and music for scenes made specifically for film, TV and other media. Although a large portion of this music was never actually used and has been locked away forever, many nuggets have indeed been used in various capacities and have even made their way onto re-issues and compilations. As you can imagine, in the 1970s, it was heaped high with the funk. One of the finest keyboardists/session players/writers/arrangers in the game from that era was UK's ALAN HAWKSHAW, who penned seminal jams like "THE CHAMP".....

.....Father of songstress KIRSTY HAWKSHAW (who's lent her vocal talents to DnB artists such as PARADOX, SEBA, and OUTRAGE), ALAN made countless, complex takes on fusion which fit snugly into mood-setting backdrops for action and dramatic scenes in '70s pop culture. Also a prolific collaborator and session musician or 'sideman,' HAWKSHAW found time to record a few solo LP's including 1977's 'THE ROAD FORWARD' (KPM 1192) which produced many a dope cut, including these.....

If you're hip to the printed word, check out Issue #38 of WAX POETICS. Since the publications's inception in late 2001, WAX POETICS has become somewhat of a bible to me as I continue seeking knowledge on the funkier side of culture's past and future. Issue #38 has a great article on European Library Music production houses/labels such as KPM MUSIC and DeWOLFE MUSIC. It's all written and put into context by none other than DAVID HOLLANDER, 70's and 80's childhood actor who played "LITTLE EARL" BENNETT on TV's WHAT'S HAPPENING!!, and more recently, the man who lent his expertise as music supervisor for 2009's cult funk celluloid hit 'BLACK DYNAMITE' (which is pure entertainment on its own, but is also expertly complemented with a soundtrack featuring many slabs of LIBRARY MUSIC tracks and scene 'stingers' - quick, mood-enhancing, shots of music) alongside a great original score by ADRIAN YOUNGE.

This month sees the release of Russia's up-n-coming producer to watch MAGE's debut LP for the KILL INC imprint entitled 'IF I COULD'.

Yes, I do indeed post my weekly 'GREENROOM' show tracklists over on the BASSDRIVE ARCHIVE FORUM, but I thought I'd use this blog as a bit more of an in-depth view of each week's show (when I have the time!).

Many people ask 'where can I download each show?' Quick and easy answer is: I actually don't upload them online. Main reason is because the music each week is very new or 'fresh' and some of the producers don't want early or unfinished versions of their music spread on the web yet to download. As a producer myself, I totally understand their point-of-views and can relate. To be honest, having a 3-hour show each week is not necessarily an easy task to fulfill as I'm constantly trying to provide brand-new music each session, air young producers' work, and promote friends' and colleagues' labels as well as my own work. So, all that combined makes for a delicate equation and I really try respect all the producers' wishes as well as attempt to provide a unique experience each time you tune in to a show. If you really want recorded documents of shows, I suggest using a Streamripper, but I don't appreciate having shows re-uploaded online. I do however have a vast archive of my BASSDRIVE sessions, GREENROOM Spotlights, and various mixes I've done for other sites, blogs, etc which you can grab over on my MIX ARCHIVE PAGE courtesy of the POSTBOCKS website.

As I mentioned during the show, SOUNDCLOUD has successfully integrated itself in this music's scene as a means for producers and labels to trade each other's works, preview music, and network in general. Personally, I've not upgraded to the more advanced package for my own personal page, but it's a great site to check out and join if you're a producer. That being said, this week's show featured a few different artists I linked thru SOUNDCLOUD, namely IMPLANT out of Hungary and D.C.'s CJ WEAVER. Both have a ton of great, original sounds. Seek 'em out. Debuted a few minimal tracks from past GREENROOM 'Spotlight' artists BLUE MOTION, as well as Russia's MR SIZEF. Played a few more bits from the excellent, debut collaborative LP '839' courtesy of JUSTICE + METRO on the unique and experimental MODERN URBAN JAZZ label (which should be dropping in shops and online in the coming month or two). New Orleans-based ECLIPSE continues to amaze with his well-polished soundscapes - you'll be hearing a lot more of him and fellow producer SOMA in the coming months for sure. Tokyo's HEAVY1 is quickly becoming my go-to guy for deep, clean tracks (be on the lookout for a podcast mix I did for him and the DEEP FLOW TOKYO FM show). Poland's RADICALL keeps coming with the goods and I played a few cuts from his own wicked imprint entitled NIGHTWORKS MUSIC. Watch out for RADICALL's debut 'EMOTIVE' LP on the great ABSYS RECORDS. Bigups to SHO and the Dublin, Ireland kru. Good friends FUSION who run the Miami-based URBAN CHEMISTRY RECORDINGS are set to drop their next label release featuring BROKEN DRUM's "MIDNIGHT HOUR" backed with "STOLEN LOVE" rounding out another great release for the imprint. The Door Opens.......

Welcome all!

Glad you could join me here in THE GREENROOM for what potentially will be a winding road of a journey thru an assortment of music, media, arts and funky bits from around the globe. Just a bit of background for those who don't know me: after growing up in suburban Chicago, I've been involved in the music scene for the better part of my life. Starting from the beginning: I had a few years' keyboard and theory training which progressed into playing in various live bands, toured around the U.S. a few times, and have also been lending my hands on a number of House music productions and remixes by the likes of ROY DAVIS JR., MARK PICCHIOTTI and RALPHI ROSARIO.

Fast forward a lil bit to now and I've been producing and releasing original Drum+Bass music under the name 'STUNNA' on a wide variety of established and new electronic dance music labels for the past few years. It was only a natural progression that I also picked up the DJ'ing aspect of the music, too, and have toured extensively around the States as well as over in Europe. Back in the early 2000's, I linked up with fellow Chicago DJs who themselves were involved with the still-young BASSDRIVE internet radio station. After many hours logged guesting on various shows, I was given an opportunity to host my own program which I named 'THE GREENROOM'. A bit of a nod to the term referring to the dressing room or 'waiting room' used by live acts at music venues, 'THE GREENROOM' was officially launched April 26, 2006 as a platform to showcase new artists, fresh music and also as an informal 'view' of the scene as it quickly progresses.
